What are your main tasks in the project?

EURECAT is responsible for two case studies. In case study 3 (Water reuse from a wastewater treatment plant with a high share of industrial wastewater), we are working on advanced wastewater treatment technologies for agricultural water reuse.  And in case study 7 (Remediation of groundwater affected by PFAS and organochlorines), we are testing and optimizing sustainable on-site remediation technologies for groundwater contaminated by industrial chemicals.

What are your goals?

Our main goal for case study 3 is to reuse wastewater in such a way that it can be used to irrigate crops. In case study 7, we aim to develop innovative and sustainable technologies to depollute groundwater and wastewater.

What do you particularly like about the project?

We like about the project that so many European countries work together to find new technologies to monitor, prevent and remediate industrial persistent and mobile toxic (iPMT) pollutants in the soil-sediment-water system.

How does your work help the general public?

Nowadays, water restrictions and consumption cuts have been adopted in some areas of Catalonia due to severe droughts. Irrigation is one of the uses which has been regulated first. If we were able to clean and reuse wastewater, this wouldn’t be a problem anymore! In addition, groundwater is a major source of drinking water, and is important for many other purposes. However, in order to be used, groundwater must meet certain quality requirements and needs to be restored if its quality is inadequate. With our work, we help to remediate polluted groundwater.
